Dr. Sean O’Donnell is a partner in the intellectual property and patent practice at IP Spring. With over 15 years of experience in the field, Sean counsels Fortune 500 companies, institutions, and high-growth start-up companies on acquiring, developing, and defending their intellectual property rights. Sean focuses his practice on due diligence, patent prosecution, licensing, and IP counseling for clients building and acquiring technologies in a variety of fields including pharmaceuticals, neurobiology, gastrointestinal biology, high throughput sequencing, high throughput drug development, immunotherapies, transgenic microorganisms, recombinant production of bioactive compounds, biofuels, medical devices, stem cells, and CRISPR.
Prior to joining IP Spring, Sean was the managing partner at Ballast IP Law, where he performed due diligence investigations, prosecuted patents, and generated license agreements for Fortune 500 companies, research institutions, and start-ups in a variety of biotechnologies. Prior to co-founding Ballast, Sean was a patent attorney at Paul Weiss and Finnegan where he represented Fortune 100 biotechnology clients in due diligence investigations and patent litigations concerning Billion-dollar biotechnology franchises.
Sean earned his Ph.D. in molecular biology and biophysics from Columbia University, in the laboratory of Richard Axel, M.D., recipient of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Sean earned a J.D., with honors, from George Washington University and a B.A. in History from Princeton University.
Sean has taught courses in: Patent & Know-How Licensing; Organic Chemistry; and Molecular Biology. He also mentors start-up companies through the Keller Center at Princeton University.
